To find the best movers in your area, begin by asking friends about movers they have used.
If you use the Yellow Pages or Google, be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau or the American Movers Conference.
The American Movers Conference does not make recommendations, but their members are required to meet certain standards and will usually accept arbitration to settle disputes.
Eliminate anyone not willing to answer questions and Invite up to four to your home for a detailed estimate.
Questions for the Agent who comes to make the estimate.
What insurance do you offer?
Is the mover bonded?
Can you move my car?
Is there a senior citizen discount?
Can I call to find out the location of my things during the move?
How much can I save by packing my own things?
What is insured if I do some of the packing?
Help the Agent calculate the cost of your move by showing him every single item to be moved. Don't forget to go into the attic, basement, garage, closets and under beds. Reach a clear understanding about the amount of packing and other services needed.
The Mover's Agent will list all your belongings, estimate the volume and weight, and provide a written estimate.
Binding Estimate: The mover might charge a nominal fee for a binding estimate which guarantees your cost (he has to spend more time to make a detailed estimate).
Non-Binding Estimate: A written estimate that carries no price-guarantee. This is a free estimate, but the the mover can charge up to 10% more than his estimate if the actual weight of your belongings is greater than his estimate.
When comparing price estimates, make sure the comparison is of "Binding" to "Binding" or "Non-Binding" to "Non-Binding."
